Human rights activist Collins Otieno has been found alive after reportedly going missing earlier this week, with rights activist Hussein Khalid confirming that he was discovered along Thika Road in the early hours of Saturday.
According to Khalid, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Vocal Africa, Otieno was found at around 4:30 a.m. by a boda boda rider who came across him along the highway and rushed him to hospital.
Otieno was reportedly in a weak and disoriented state and had sustained injuries. He was taken to Neema Uhai Hospital in the Kasarani area, where he was receiving medical attention.
The development comes a day after fellow activist Boniface Mulinge Muteti was found alive in the Lukenya area of Machakos County after being reported missing.
Otieno’s disappearance had raised concern among human rights defenders after he reportedly went missing while seeking assistance to establish the whereabouts of Muteti.
Both activists had been involved in demonstrations in Nairobi linked to calls for the release of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye. Otieno was among activists arrested during protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Monday, September 21, 2026.
Khalid said Otieno’s condition was similar to that of Muteti, who was also found injured, weak and disoriented after his disappearance.
The circumstances surrounding Otieno’s disappearance and how he ended up along Thika Road have not been publicly established. There has also been no confirmed official account explaining what happened to him during the period he was missing.
His recovery is likely to renew calls from human rights groups for investigations into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and subsequent discovery of the two activists.
The latest development also comes amid heightened concerns among civil society organisations over the safety of activists following recent demonstrations and reports of disappearances.
