A postmortem examination conducted on the bodies of two young men who died during the chaos that erupted at Nembure Stadium in Embu County on Saturday has confirmed that they died from gunshot wounds.
The two, boda boda operator Moses Munene, 30 and footballer Mike Lewis, 23, lost their lives during confrontations that broke out at a UDA’s delegates meeting that was chaired by the Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki.
The postmortem exercise was conducted by two pathologists, Dr. Rosemary Kamau based at Embu Level Five Hospital representing the Government and Dr. Job Mwali representing the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU).
According to the findings relayed to the media by Dr. Rosemary, Munene had a single gunshot wound to the head that also exited leaving behind extensive damage to the brain and cranial fractures.
“We have concluded that the cause of death was severe head injury secondary to a single penetrating gunshot wound to the head,” she reported.
For Mike Lewis, Dr. Rosemary said he had a single gunshot wound to the right leg which caused a compound fracture with massive collection of blood outside of the damaged blood vessels also referred to as haematoma.
“The cause of death for Mike Lewis was severe hemorrhage secondary to compound right femur fracture as a result of a single penetrating gunshot wound,” she said.
She noted that no bullet was recovered from both bodies because the bullets had passed through leaving both entry and exit wounds.
The findings come as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the shooting of the two men during the chaos at the stadium.
Family members who witnessed the postmortem exercise expressed deep pain over the loss of their loved ones and called for justice, saying they want those responsible for the deaths to be held accountable.
The families said the postmortem findings had confirmed that their relatives died from gunshot injuries and urged relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation is conducted to establish how the shootings occurred and bring justice to the bereaved families.
Human Rights Advocate from VOCAl Africa Raskin Oyugi said it was unfortunate that political meetings and rallies had become places where young Kenyans are meeting their deaths.
He appealed to the Government to organize a training of the police on crowd control while also calling on IPOA to conduct thorough investigations to bring those involved in the death of the two young men brought to book.
