The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the death of a man who was found hanging inside a police cell at Narumoru Police Station in Nyeri County.

The man, identified as Dennis Aremo Osiemo, was reportedly found dead on Sunday, September 20, 2026, while in police custody. His death occurred a day before he was expected to appear in court over an assault case.

According to police, Osiemo was found hanging from ventilation grills inside the cell. He had been arrested on September 18 in Kisii County by Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers, with assistance from officers attached to Keroka Police Station in Nyamira County.

He was subsequently transferred to Narumoru Police Station, where he was booked on September 19.

Osiemo had been arrested in connection with an assault case reported at Narumoru Police Station. Investigators alleged that he had assaulted and stabbed his former employer several times on July 2 before fleeing the scene.

The complainant was reportedly admitted to hospital for several days following the incident.

The case was later taken over by DCI detectives, who traced Osiemo to Kisii and arrested him. Police said he appeared to be in normal condition when he was booked at Narumoru Police Station.

Following his death, IPOA dispatched investigators to establish the circumstances surrounding what happened while he was in custody.

A post-mortem examination is expected to provide further information on the cause and circumstances of his death. The examination is expected to be conducted in the presence of IPOA investigators and members of Osiemo’s family.

IPOA has said it is committed to establishing the circumstances surrounding the death and has assured the family that the matter is being investigated.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has also indicated that it will cooperate with the independent investigation.

The case has drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding deaths in police custody, with the ongoing IPOA probe expected to establish what happened to Osiemo before he was found dead inside the cell.
