MASENO, KISUMU — Police have arrested two suspects and recovered 11 laptops and three mobile phones believed to have been stolen from university students and other victims in Maseno, Kisumu County.
The arrests followed a theft report filed on September 10, 2026, after a complainant reported that his laptop had been stolen from his hostel room.
According to the National Police Service, investigations traced the stolen laptop to an electronics repair shop in Maseno Township. The complainant accompanied police officers to the shop and positively identified the device as his.
Police said the owner of the repair shop told investigators that he had bought the laptop from a third party. Officers then instructed him to contact the seller and lure him back to the shop, where he was arrested.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of another laptop and a mobile phone. The two devices were later identified as belonging to another university student who had previously reported them stolen.
Police then conducted a wider search of the electronics repair shop, recovering 10 additional laptops and two more mobile phones.
The shop owner was unable to account for how he had obtained the devices, raising further questions about their possible connection to other theft cases.
The two suspects are currently being held at Maseno Police Station as investigations continue ahead of their expected arraignment in court. The recovered electronic devices have been documented and retained as exhibits.
Police have urged members of the public to exercise caution when purchasing second-hand electronic devices, particularly from unverified dealers or individuals who cannot provide proof of ownership.
The National Police Service has also warned that buying or possessing stolen property is a criminal offence.
The latest recovery comes amid continued police efforts to tackle the trade in stolen electronic devices, particularly in areas surrounding institutions of higher learning.
Investigations are expected to establish the source of the recovered laptops and phones and determine whether the suspects may be linked to other reported theft cases in the area.
