Residents of Iranya in Kitutu Masaba Constituency, Nyamira County, have staged peaceful demonstrations demanding justice following the death of 24-year-old Dennis Oremo Osiemo while in police custody.
Osiemo was arrested on September 18, 2026, by Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers, with assistance from officers based at Keroka Police Station, in connection with an alleged assault case. He was later taken to Narumoru Police Station in Nyeri County.
Police reportedly informed his family that Osiemo was found hanging inside a cell using a piece of mattress covering. His family, however, has disputed the account and is calling for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The family has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other relevant authorities to establish what happened to Osiemo while he was in custody.
IPOA has confirmed that it opened investigations into the death. The authority has also said its investigators were dispatched to Narumoru Police Station to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Osiemo’s body was taken to Narumoru Level 4 Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination, which is expected to help establish the cause and circumstances of his death.
The demonstrations in Iranya have renewed calls for accountability in cases involving deaths in police custody, with residents and the family seeking a clear explanation of what happened to the 24-year-old before his death.
Investigations by IPOA are ongoing.
