Detectives investigating the killing of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu have arrested a third suspect, nearly a year after the prominent lawyer was shot dead along Magadi Road in Nairobi.
The latest suspect has been identified as Noah Kipkirui Langat, a boda boda rider who is alleged to have conducted surveillance on Mbobu before the fatal shooting on September 9, 2025.
Langat’s arrest comes shortly after detectives apprehended Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, who is suspected of being the gunman, and another boda boda rider, Nicholas Lemiso Naula, who investigators believe transported Cheruiyot to and from the scene of the shooting.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the three suspects are currently in custody as detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Mbobu’s death and the possible involvement of other individuals.
A major breakthrough in the investigation came after detectives recovered a Ceska pistol that had reportedly been issued to Cheruiyot. The firearm was subjected to ballistic examination, with investigators saying the results linked it to the weapon used in the shooting.
Lemiso is suspected of providing transport during the operation, while Langat is being investigated over allegations that he monitored Mbobu before the lawyer was killed.
The investigation has also brought attention to another police officer, Inspector Kenneth Sang, who detectives say remains at large. According to investigators, Sang allegedly coordinated the operation together with Rose Mbithe, who is already in custody in connection with the July 2026 killing of psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
Mbobu was shot on September 9, 2025, while driving home from work along Magadi Road. He was a former chairman of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal and had been involved in several high-profile legal matters.
The latest arrests come as homicide detectives and forensic teams continue working to reconstruct the events leading to the killing and establish the roles of individuals who may have planned, facilitated or executed the attack.
With three suspects now in custody, the DCI says investigations remain active as detectives pursue additional leads and seek to establish the full circumstances behind the lawyer’s murder.
